GIとは

「GI=ジオグラフィカル・インディケーション（Geographical Indication）」です。

　この単語には見覚えがなくても、「ブルゴーニュ地方のワイン」といった特定の地域ならではの、他地域とは一線を画す逸品を認定ラベリングによって保護するという趣旨については、イメージできるのではないでしょうか。

　「GI=ジオグラフィカル・インディケーション」は、クオリティや評価を特定の産地と結びつつける、農林水産省の表示です。その産地の特性が、生産物のクオリティと強く結びつく場合に登録でき、登録産品には「夕張メロン」「市田柿」など、有名ブランドが名を連ねています。特定の産地がもつ環境、文化に基づいた産品は、それだからこその魅力をたっぷりと内包していますが、そのブランドネームにあやかる疑似的な商法の蔓延や規模の小さな産地が多いことによる存続の危機など、さまざまな懸念材料があります。

環境、文化に基づくといえば、日本酒もその筆頭です。だからこそ「GI」を理解し、活用して、

産地の結束、ユーザーの応援に結び付けることが未来を築く重要な手段なのではないでしょうか。私たちも積極的にお手伝いしています。

About GI

Even if you don’t recognize this word, you can think of it as something like this: Just like wine from the Burgundy region is a gem that is unique to a specific area that sets it apart from other areas, people can protect a special product by using a certified labelling system.

Geographical Indication (GI) is a certified label from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries that links the quality of a product to a specific production area. It can be registered when the characteristics of the production area are strongly linked to the quality of the product. Registered products include famous brands such as Yubari Melons and Ichida Persimmons.  

A product that is based on the environment and the culture of a particular production area has a lot of charm because of that very reason. But there are various concerns surrounding this, such as the increase of misuse of brand names, and the difficulty in the continuous production of sake because they are made in small-scale production areas.  

When talking about a drink based on an environment and culture, sake is one of the first to come to mind. That is why, by understanding and utilizing GI, the uniting of production areas and the supporting of GI users become important means to build the future.
